Aaron Blabey's "The Bad Guys" -- Writing the Antagonist -- Lesson Plan

$10.00

So, you’ve covered all the ‘heroes’ in literature and have watched your students create sweet ‘good guys’ who save the day in their stories--time and again. But are you ready (and are they) to switch things up? Here’s just the lesson to help make that transition and dive into the ‘dark side’ and explore the ‘bad guys’—or the antagonists—in writing! (Now, antagonists do not always have to be villainous ‘bad guys’, of course, but it is a way to motivate student writing. I know my students LOVE writing hilariously dark stories!)

In this Fearless Dragon Writers, LLC Lesson Plan (created by writer and writing teacher Andrea Felcone) you will find a FULLY SCRIPTED lesson plan to teach a ‘WRITING THE ANTAGONIST/BUILD A VILLAIN’ writing lesson based on author/illustrator Aaron Blabey's “The Bad Guys” (specifically Books 1 and 2 of the series).

It may seem like an unusual choice to use “The Bad Guys” books as mentor texts, but children LOVE graphic novels (especially 8 - 13-year-olds) and these books resonate with—and inspire--reluctant writers (and reluctant readers). This series is a great example of the “Bad Guy”/ANTAGONIST in the sweetest of ways, as these ‘bad guys’ are struggling to reinvent themselves and ‘do good’. (Plus, if your students haven’t read the books yet, they may have seen the movies so they will be familiar with the series.)

Inside, there are specific ways to write ‘VILLAINS’ and, even though these are not mysteries, there's even an opportunity to ramp up the fun by using a Mystery-themed tie-in that works! There are also suggestions for other Fearless Dragon Writers’ graphic novel lesson plans to pair with this one! (All available on this website as well.)

This lesson plan contains—20 pages of tested content—including Teaching Tips, Techniques, and a Fearless Dragon Writers' Writing Worksheet (filled with humorous and thoughtful prompts) to inspire writers—even reluctant writers!

Writing Concepts covered: Writing the Antagonist/Build a Villain!

So, take a break from the syrupy-sweet side of life, and explore some of the sweetest bad guys ever written!

(This lesson was designed for 8 - 13-year-olds. There is content here to teach for 90 minutes. You can edit to fit your class length as needed.)
