Today, my friends, welcome to a LESSON PLAN that invites your students to the Dr. Seuss-inspired “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Dish, Blue Dish” restaurant! (And “yes,” I’m super proud of that name!) Here, they will use their best DESCRIPTIVE WRITING skills to write a silly, Seussian RESTAURANT REVIEW that is sure to please!
In this Fearless Dragon Writers, LLC Lesson Plan (created by writer and writing teacher Andrea Felcone), you will find a FULLY SCRIPTED lesson plan to teach DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE through writing RESTAURANT REVIEWS using the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” as a mentor text. This lesson plan contains—19 pages of tested content—including Teaching Tips, Techniques, and a Fearless Dragon Writers' Writing Worksheet (filled with all the details on how to write these reviews) to inspire writers—even reluctant writers! The objective: To write a SEUSSIAN RESTAURANT REVIEW that emphasizes DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE.
The KEY to this lesson is having the right “PROPS”: To create this Seussian Restaurant Review, students need to “crack open” a GREEN EGG (plastic). Inside, you will have placed a printed picture of a HAM with a SEUSS CHARACTER (another printed picture glued to the back of the ‘ham’). Also, inside the egg is one STRANGE ENTRÉE (again, a picture printed from the internet: Google weird foods of the 1950s and 1960s, and you’ll have your pick of “yummy” Jell-O molds and Spam aspics!) Then ADD one ODD DESSERT (go back to that same internet and find some fairly odd desserts). Now each student writes a silly RESTAURANT REVIEW incorporating: 1) the Seuss character, 2) the entrée, and 3) the dessert they found in their own individual GREEN EGG! So much fun!
And if you think an entire lesson spent writing restaurant reviews seems frivolous…. I beg to differ. It's an excellent way to teach DESCRIPTIVE WRITING! (Sneak it in, just like hiding those peas under the mashed potatoes!) Also, writing restaurant reviews teaches children to observe and communicate effectively, while thinking critically—all while enjoying the intersection of food and storytelling!
