"Mickey & Me" is an entertaining and informative work of historical fiction--part of the popular "Baseball Card Adventure" series by author Dan Gutman. If you haven't yet read it, the main character is able to travel through time using a special baseball card that allows him to visit the player/time period on the card. Now, you may assume by its title that the main character is about to visit Mickey Mantle--but, there's a twist--he is actually sent back in time to visit the 1940s female baseball player--Dorothy "Mickey" Maguire. (Fun! And an important part of sports history!) This book is also a wonderful mentor-text to use to teach 'GREAT OPENINGS' or 'STORY STARTERS' for young writers.

After reading an excerpt from this book (I like to read Pages 1 - 9), you can discuss GREAT OPENINGS (use your own materials, or purchase my FULL LESSON PLAN*--FULLY SCRIPTED with enough content to teach for 90 minutes, for the way I teach GREAT OPENINGS), then distribute this Printable Writing Worksheet and Themed Activity Sheet. Have your students select their favorite Writing Choice from the Worksheet (no dry prompts!), allowing them at least twenty minutes to write their stories. Sharing time is next, with students reading aloud from their stories, and walking the class through the drawings on their Activity Sheets.
