Fearless Dragon Writers' "On Account of the Gum"/Adam Rex Writing Worksheet & Author Fun-Fact Sheet

$4.00

Are you STUCK? Looking for something NEW to inspire student writing while teaching the writing concept of PLOT? Well, you have come to the right place! In Adam Rex's "On Account of the Gum," a common enough situation—getting gum stuck in one’s hair—leads to an all-out absurd attempt to solve the problem. The PLOT grows thicker and thicker—as does the mess!—as each suggestion leads to a further complication for the protagonist. (Now there are scissors … sticks of butter … a rabbit … all stuck in the protagonist’s hair … one thing leads to another in this delightful ‘chain story’.) Your students will love how funny and absurd the whole situation becomes! (This is classic Adam Rex!) And you will love that this book offers a charming way to teach PLOT to your students, because one of the easiest ways to write a successful PLOT is to pile complications onto the main character!

Although the PLOT of this book is one sticky mess, your teaching can be effortless: Simply pair your read-aloud of "On Account of the Gum" with the enclosed Fearless Dragon Writers' AUTHOR FUN-FACT SHEET and WRITING WORKSHEET, and you have a FUN way to teach your students about PLOT! Plus, the idea of ‘getting stuck’ provides a nice segue into discussing TIPS on OVERCOMING WRITER’S BLOCK. (No worries! TIPS are included in this WRITING WORKSHEET.)

These materials were designed to get children (ages 8 – 13) thinking about--and practicing--a well-structured PLOT in writing. These materials are at the heart of my Adam Rex/"On Account of the Gum" LESSON PLAN. You can use these materials in several ways, but I like to use them as follows....

* I start by READING ALOUD the picture book “On Account of the Gum" (by Adam Rex). Then, I share the information on the AUTHOR FUN-FACT SHEET so my students get to know the person behind the words and illustrations of the book I just read to them. Then, I ...

* TEACH a lesson on 'PLOT'. You can make it easy on yourself and use my FULL LESSON PLAN (also on this website) if you like. It is FULLY SCRIPTED and contains enough material for 1.5 hours of teaching. (Trim it as you see fit.)

Then, DISTRIBUTE and READ ALOUD the Printable WRITING WORKSHEET. Have your students select their favorite Writing Choice from the Writing Worksheet! Allow at least 20 minutes of student WRITING TIME. * Then allow at least 20 minutes for SHARING TIME as the children read their work aloud in a supportive environment.

NOTE: There's much more valuable content in the FULL LESSON PLAN, as well as Writing Teaching Tips, and more! For instance ... the FULL LESSON PLAN contains BONUS CONTENT—with some very UNIQUE and FUN ideas like how to incorporate "Magical Gum Splats of Destiny"! What are those? Pink construction paper cut-outs that look like 'gum splats', but they contain words and phrases from the book that your students are challenged to work into the PLOT of their stories! (Your students pair a WRITING CHOICE from the WRITING WORKSHEET with a "Magical Gum Splat" and voila, they are off to the races! Templates for the "Magical Gum Splats" are included in the FULL LESSON PLAN if you would like to try this! (There's also an idea on how you can present these 'gum splats' to your students. I am still laughing about how my students reacted to the presentation of these and how the 'gum splats' inspired writing! They were magical! AND ... there is another 'gum-themed' activity you can try with your students--no actual gum required! Simply purchase the FULL LESSON PLAN to see what FUN (and silly) things you can bring into your classroom to inspire student writing!)

Thank you for joining me in my mission to make writing fun for children!

Reluctant writers included!
