Grace Lin's "Fortune Cookie Fortunes" -- Writing Dialogue Lesson Plan
Since fortune cookies "speak to us," Grace Lin’s “Fortune Cookie Fortunes” seemed like an excellent book (and opportunity) to discuss DIALOGUE in writing! In this Fearless Dragon Writers, LLC Lesson Plan (created by writer and writing teacher Andrea Felcone), you will find a FULLY SCRIPTED lesson plan to teach DIALOGUE in writing using Grace Lin’s “Fortune Cookie Fortunes” as a mentor text. This is a delightful book by an interesting author/illustrator who strongly believes in diversity in children’s literature.
This lesson plan references Grace Lin’s TED Talk, “The Windows and Mirrors of your Child’s Bookshelf”—which includes a beautiful comparison of how books can be windows (showing you the world) as well as mirrors (showing you a reflection of yourself). Author/Illustrator Grace Lin has made it her mission to provide these kinds of mirrors to children who might not otherwise see themselves in books. (She didn’t see herself in books when she was a child, so she has dedicated her writing/illustrating career to adding to the body of work that celebrates diversity.) This lesson plan can be part of a larger Writing Workshop that explores diversity in literature.
This lesson plan contains—19 pages of tested content—including Teaching Tips, Techniques, and a Fearless Dragon Writers' Writing Worksheet (filled with creative prompts) to inspire writers—even reluctant writers! This lesson plan is designed for children ages 8 – 12. Writing Concept covered: DIALOGUE in writing.
Bonus content: Ways to use the Chinese Zodiac Animal Signs to add more fun to this lesson! Teachers, Parents, Homeschoolers: Use this lesson to tie into the Lunar New Year!
