Judi Barrett's "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" -- Settings and Hyperbole Lesson Plan

Judi Barrett’s “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” provides so much material as a mentor text for writing. Children really respond to the over-the-top humor, the intricate pen-and-ink illustrations, and the main concept: What could be funnier than raining meatballs? And let’s not forget the mashed potatoes, pancakes, soup, hamburgers … I need to stop before I have to break for lunch! The point is, children really respond to this book! And the writing that it inspires is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! (Sunny skies ahead!)

Although I’m sure you could think of many writing concepts to draw out of this classic, Judi Barrett's town of ‘ChewandSwallow’ inspired me to use this book as an excellent example to discuss SETTINGS in writing! And since there are so many TALL TALE elements involved in this story, I threw in a bit on HYPERBOLE as well! (To this day, I can still hear my eighth-grade English teacher explaining that HYPERBOLE is ‘exaggeration for the sake of emphasis’. To this very day.)

There are writing opportunities here for: children who love FOOD; children who love WEATHER; children who love INVENTIVE SETTINGS; children who love TALL TALES…. This is an ideal lesson for reluctant writers as well as for children who enjoy writing.
