In this Fearless Dragon Writers, LLC Lesson Plan (created by writer and writing teacher Andrea Felcone) you will find a FULLY SCRIPTED lesson plan to teach a 'Drawing Your Way Into Writing'/STORYBOARDING writing lesson based on Kate DiCamillo’s “Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures”.
It may not always seem like it, but with WRITING, there's always a WAY IN. Many times, it is through DRAWING that children find a way into WRITING. In this lesson, students will be inspired to write a story--either a traditional story--OR a STORYBOARD story using the Comic Strip Storyboard Template provided. STORYBOARDING is a great technique for reluctant writers, and also for teaching STORY STRUCTURE: strong BEGINNINGS; interesting 'MIDDLES' (conflict!); and wonderful ENDINGS -- that either resolve the conflict or leave a cliffhanger for the reader! (In my experience, kids love cliffhangers!)
This lesson plan contains—19 pages of tested content—including Teaching Tips, Techniques, and a Fearless Dragon Writers' Writing Worksheet (filled with humorous and thoughtful prompts) to inspire writers—even reluctant writers! Writing Concepts covered: 'Drawing Your Way Into Writing'/STORYBOARDING in writing.
Bonus content: Suggestions for Vocabulary building and for additional books to use as STORYBOARDING MENTOR TEXTS. (This lesson was designed for 8 - 13-year-olds. There is content here to teach for 90 minutes. You can edit to fit your class length as needed.)
