Fearless Dragon Writers' "The Bad Guys"/Aaron Blabey Writing Worksheet & Activity Sheet
Now I don’t know about your students, but mine LOVE to write dark stories. (Funny stories, but dark, nonetheless.) They make themselves laugh so much with their tales of mystery and mayhem. (Children laughing while writing is on my all-time top ten list of things I love.) Let’s face it, it’s fun to write ‘dark’ stories that feature ‘bad guys’. Even if you are focused on the ‘good guys,’ you need some conflict in an interesting story…. Cue ‘the bad guys’.
So, to that end, here are some writing materials designed to teach children (ages 8 – 13) the writing concept of WRITING THE ANTAGONIST/ ‘BUILD A VILLAIN’! These materials were created for the mentor text: "The Bad Guys" (Books 1 & 2, by author/illustrator Aaron Blabey) and are at the heart of my FULL LESSON PLAN for that book. You can use these materials in several ways, but I like to use them as follows...
* START by READING ALOUD excerpts from Books 1 & 2 of “The Bad Guys” by Aaron Blabey. (I provide suggestions here for what I like to read aloud.) Then …
* TEACH a lesson on WRITING THE ANTAGONIST/ ‘BUILD A VILLAIN’. You can make it easy on yourself and use my FULL LESSON PLAN (also on this webpage) if you like. It is FULLY SCRIPTED and contains enough material for 1.5 hours of teaching. (Trim it as you see fit.)
*Then, DISTRIBUTE and READ ALOUD the Printable WRITING WORKSHEET and the ACTIVITY SHEET (a.k.a. “RAP SHEET”. Afterall, what’s a bad guy without a ‘rap sheet’?) Have your students select their favorite Writing Choice from the Writing Worksheet! Allow at least 20 minutes of student WRITING TIME. *Then allow at least 20 minutes for SHARING TIME as the children read their work aloud in a supportive environment. The ACTIVITY SHEET can be used as a pre-writing warm-up activity, OR as a post-writing activity that may jumpstart a future story!
NOTE: There's much more valuable content in the FULL LESSON PLAN, as well as Writing Teaching Tips, Some Author Fun Facts, and more! So, please check it out! Also, if you are a parent/guardian and you are homeschooling, this series (and these writing materials) work well for reluctant writers (and readers)!
To purchase, simply CLICK ON “ADD TO CART” button. After CHECKOUT you will receive a LINK to DOWNLOAD these MATERIALS. (Download as soon as possible after receiving the link to ensure link stays active. Thank you!)
* For a convenient link to purchase these books, please click here: “The Bad Guys”. (Note: This is an Amazon Affiliate Link, I earn a small percentage on qualifying purchases. Thank you for your support!)
Thank you for joining me in my mission to make writing fun for children!
Reluctant writers included!
